3 Introduction Prescribing Academy Model 2 DHC Prescribing Academy - commenced 2012 to promote and support Quality Prescribing following the amalgamation of 3 separate Community Trusts into a University Foundation Trust. Developed - to standardise Best Prescribing Practice across a diversity of Community & Mental Health Services & to meet individual patient & service needs across a wide range of Urban & Rural communities.

4 Prescribing Academy Aim Prescribing Academy Model 2 Promote - Quality and Patient Safety with regard to Trust wide Prescribing. Support - Professional Development and Competency in Prescribing Practice through education. Assure - good governance.

5 DHC Prescribing Profile Prescribing Academy Model 2 NMP DHC Profile: 342 NMPs & 112 medical prescribers. 120 V300 & 222 V100 Independent/Supplementary V300/V200 include: Nurses / Podiatrists / Optometrists / Physiotherapists / Pharmacists Community Prescribers V100/V150 – HV / DN 1/3 of all clinical DHC staff are prescribers. Covering Mental Health/Community Health Services /Prisons/Children & Family Services/In-Patient & Community Care.

6 Prescribing Academy Model 2 Faculty – Chief Pharmacist / NMP Lead / Director of Nursing / Medical Director / Physical & Mental Health Doctors / Community Matron / NMP Administrator. Virtual Academy - linked to the Trust Medicines Management and Non Medical Prescribing Groups. Working - to promote Quality Prescribing through use of a clear governance framework & annual updated Strategy.

7 Prescribing Academy Model 2 Database - Management / NMP Registration. Preceptorship - Contracts. Standards – competency portfolios & annual governance returns Management Check List – linked to University Course Criteria to support Operational Management agreement & requests for NMP Role Development.

8 Academy Model – Education & Development Prescribing Academy Model 2 CPD Programme – monthly education sessions on a range of topics open to all prescribers – can be internal Trust speakers or external Consultants. Sessions are 2 ½ hours minimum. Action Learning Groups – held monthly in 4 main localities of the Trust & for specific groups. NMP Conferences - 2 per year 1 for Generalists and 1 for Mental Health focused NMPs which include key speakers and specific workshops.

9 Academy Model – Education & Development Prescribing Academy Model 2 NMP Trust Induction – 2 per year linked to end of courses – open to new and new to Trust prescribers. 1 year Preceptorship Programme – for new prescribers to enable Portfolio Development and support within specialist and generalist areas. Preceptee allocated Preceptor for individual support. Quarterly - Portfolio Development workshops using re-validation portfolio template. Annual - Preceptor workshops.

11 Future Plans using evaluation feedback Prescribing Academy Model 2 Set up similar model for Advanced Professional Practice to support community based Band 5 – 8 development. Continue to support workforce development to include Non Medical Prescribing. Define databaseV300/V100/V150/Dormant/Associates Use lessons learned & data from Prescribing Errors and activity to feedback to ALGs. Portfolio / Peer Review. Continue to promote Quality Prescribing.
