The Northeast has few natural resources.- (compared to other regions) - The Appalachian Mountains - thin, rocky soils and steep hills (rugged) - make some parts of the Northeast a challenge for farmers Few minerals - except for Pennsylvania (rich in coal)
6
Water - one major resource that has turned the Northeast into a center of trade, commerce, and industry. Natural Harbors - The North Atlantic supported a thriving fishing industry
7
Northeast Rivers - the many rivers of the Northeast- including the Connecticut and the Hudson- have provided power used for machinery. Precipitation- combined with the hilly terrain- keeps the rivers of the region flowing. - water wheels convert water power into machine power
8
During 1800’s - Many factories were built near waterfalls along the region’s rivers. - River valleys were trade routes, railroad routes, - and later highway routes. By the 1900’s - Most productive manufacturing region in the world.
