Major task is “making it in the adult world”; Advance in career; Family, friendships, community are important; Fulfill dreams set in previous stages   Age 40 Transitional Period- ages 38-42: turning point between young and middle adulthood; differences between the dream and reality; divorce and career changes possible; advancement and achievement not as important   Beginning or middle adulthood- Mid 40s: greater acceptance of self; more concerned with enjoying life and work; greater concern for others

8 THE STUDY OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS SOCIOLOGY HOLT, RINEHART AND WINSTON 8 Phases of Adult Female Development  Phase 1: Leaving the Family – young women leave home, break from their parents, and form a life plan, with an emphasis on marriage over establishing a career.  Phase 2: Entering the Adult World – many women, often in their twenties, marry and have children. More than half combine work and motherhood. Others leave work, which limits later job opportunities. Section 1: Early and Middle Adulthood

They then pursue their career goals, similar to men in their twenties. Section 1: Early and Middle Adulthood (continued)

10 THE STUDY OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS SOCIOLOGY HOLT, RINEHART AND WINSTON Describe what you believe to be a fulfilled life:   Would you be happy if you had a wonderful family, plenty of close friends and dates, yet no success at all in school, in athletics, or at work and absolutely nothing to do with your time but spend it with your friends?   Would you be happy if you had a great job that paid lots of money, had excellent grades in school and were an award winning swimmer but had no close relationships with friends, family, or other swimmers, and students?   According to Freud: a fulfilled life is one that maintains a balance between 2 important elements-love and work.   In past generations many men and women were not living fulfilled lives because women denied their need for fulfilling work and men denied their need for fulfilling relationships.   Today because of more liberated sex roles, both men and women are freer to satisfy their needs for both love and work.
