1 Using the Atlas to Teach Oklahoma State Standards (Grades 2-5) An Online Tutorial by Denise Zablocki White Oklahoma State University

2 What is an Atlas? An atlas is a bound collection of maps compiled into an easy-to-use format. Some atlases are general and include the entire world. Other atlases are specific to a certain location, topic, or time period. Atlases are used to find where a certain place is located. Atlases are also used to study various features of an area such as the topography, natural resources, climate, population, and industries. (ehow.com)

3 How Do You Use an Atlas? Select the appropriate atlas for your needs. Use the index to find the specific location you want. Study the map key or legend, map scale, and other symbols used to orient yourself to the layout of your map. Take note of other information included in your atlas such as population and climate.

4 Atlases in Elementary Education Several Oklahoma P.A.S.S. objectives for students in 2 nd – 5 th grades require the use of an atlas. This tutorial will introduce appropriate print and non-print atlases that will allow teachers to teach and students to effectively practice these standards.
