D.O.G.S.T.A.I.L.S Warm-Up Questions 1. Recall- What elements make up a good map? (DOK 1) 2. Prediction- What parts of a map do the letters DOGSTAILS represent? (DOK 2)

D - date ► Tells when the map was made! (Example-2008) **If the map is in a book, it is the date the book was published**

O - orientation ► Refers to the cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) and is shown by an arrow or compass rose!

G - grid ► A set of intersecting lines that provides a way of determining the absolute location of a place! Known as Latitude and Longitude.

S - scale ► Shows the relationship of map distances to actual distances on the earth’s surface!

T - title ► Describes what the map shows!

A - author ►I►Identifies the individual or institution that created the map! ►(►(Ex.- Nystrom)

I - index ► Presents a list of places on a map and gives the grid location of each place when there is not enough room to write them out.

L – legend (key) ► Defines the map’s symbols and colors

S - source ► Identifies the institution or resource from which the information on the map was compiled!
