2 Purpose of Applications Employers use job applications to: – screen potential employees – determine who want to interview An application puts all candidates on the same playing field. Everyone completes same information in same order. Makes it easier for employer to compare qualifications.

3 Purpose of Applications Cont. Provides employer with a legal record of personal & employment history verified & signed by applicant. If hired, application is kept in personnel file. The most important rule is to follow the directions. If job posting says to apply in person, do not call the company.

4 Purpose of Applications Cont. If job posting says to ‘snail’ mail your resume, do not send attached to an email. When job listing says apply using company website, do not go to the company to fill out an application. Employer will judge you based on how well you follow directions!

5 Types of Applications Most companies use standard paper and pencil application form. – Read application carefully & provide specific information and experience it states. – Be sure to write legibly so that your information is clear.

6 Online Applications Online websites where complete job application or post resume. – Search for jobs and submit application & resume online. Online application on company website. – Visit company website to view career opportunities & enter information online. Some companies have application kiosks – Go to the company but enter information in online application instead of paper application.

7 Importance of an Application Just like resume, an Application is a key marketing tool. Opportunity show employer you are best qualified candidate for position. Most effective application is customized to specific job title – Focus on employer's stated job requirements – Research position & company determine essential skills & knowledge required to do job.

Build application around these requirements You will then be more likely to be selected for an interview. Do not exaggerate or lie on application Once you date & sign application, it becomes legal document.
