OBJECTIVES - CLASSROOM n Describe the operation of a pulsed secondary Air Injection System. n Explain the operation of a secondary Air Injection System when the engine is started. n Describe the operation of a secondary Air Injection System during engine warm-up. n Describe operation at normal operating temp. CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
3
OBJECTIVES - LAB n Diagnose and service pulsed Air Injection Systems. n Diagnose and service secondary Air Injection Systems. n Use a scan tester to diagnose secondary Air Injection Systems. n Diagnose engine performance problems caused by AIR defects. CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
4
AIR INJECTION SYSTEMS n There are two types; –Pulsed Air Injection –Pump type AIR systems CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
5
PULSED AIR INJECTION n Identified by the absence of a pump. n Main components; –Manifold with Check valves –Hoses –Filter Page 274 Classroom 354 Lab CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
6
SYSTEM DESIGN n Main system components are; –Air Pump –AIR Bypass valve –AIR Divert valve –Check valves –Manifolds and Hoses –Filter Page 274 Classroom 355 Lab CBCAUTOMOTIVERK

THERMACTOR
8
INITIAL START-UP n PCM de-energizes AIR Bypass solenoid. n PCM de-energizes AIR Divert solenoid. n Air flow is bypassed to atmosphere. Page 277 Classroom 356 Lab CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
9
ENGINE WARM-UP n PCM energizes AIR Bypass solenoid. n PCM energizes AIR Divert solenoid. n Air flow is upstream, to exhaust manifolds. n Air is used to continue burning HC. Page 277 Classroom 357 Lab CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
10
NORMAL OPERATING TEMP n PCM keeps AIR Bypass solenoid energized. n PCM de-energizes AIR Divert solenoid. n Air flow is downstream. n Air is used in the converter for oxidation. Page 278 Classroom 358 Lab CBCAUTOMOTIVERK
