-Great Britain owned 13 Colonies in North America -France, Spain, Native Americans and Great Britain competed for the North American Land for farm land and fur. -They used Native Americas for alliances and soldiers. -French and Indian War was a war fought between France and Great Britain. -Great Britain were the winners!

Spain controlled the West of America and Florida.
Growing Tensions and Gaining Enemies The British were not alone. They competed with France, Spain and the Native Americans for land. Where are the Native Americans?

The bravest of the English colonists wanted to expand past the Appalachian Mountains.
Soon, English interests came into conflict with French interests. Disputes arose over the Ohio Territory and parts of Canada. What would be encouraging colonists to move farther West? They want more land to farm or hunt. They want to escape city life.

Morning Review Write down 5 of the 13 Original Colonies. Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island 2. What problems did the British create for the French and Native Americans? They moved out west into French Territory. They kicked the Native Americans off their land.

Sizing up the Situation (Not the guy from Jersey Shore)
France Great Britain/Colonies -France had less troops than Great Britain -Troop pay depended on the fur trade. -Shipped food from France BUT -1 government controlled the troops -Towns and forts were closer together and were easy to defend -Native America Allies -Colonies supplied their own militia to add to the British Troops. Could feed their own troops. BUT -Each colony wanted to control their own militias and so they fought over every little thing.

What is the definition of a militia?
Is a force made up of civilians trained as soldiers but not part of the regular army.

Beginning of the War -French started bringing in troops and building forts along the Appalachian Mountains.

First battle was at Fort Duquesne (Do- Kane), 1754.
Colonel George Washington launched a failed attack with only 150 men. Then as he retreated, he made his own fort (Fort Necessity) and was beat by the French.

Braddock’s Defeat After the defeat of Washington, General Braddock launched a counter attack against Fort Duquesne. His force was ambushed and destroyed by a French and Indian force. After the defeat Great Britain officially declared war in 1756 to begin the Seven Years War ( ) Turn to page 140 and read the George Washington quote to your neighbor and express your thoughts on the defeat of General Braddock.
