Main Idea: Organisms have adaptations to survive in their various environments. When an ecosystem changes, some living things survive and some do not survive. Unit 1 Life Science Chapter 3 Adaptations in Ecosystems Made by Jennifer Davis-Kelley Made by Jennifer Davis-Kelley Photo taken by Jessica Davis Gould… Mrs. DK’s sister

Chapter Preview Look at the lesson titles, vocabulary words, and pictures. Predict what the lessons will be about.

Assess Prior Knowledge How are ecosystems on Earth different from each other? How are ecosystems on Earth different from each other? How do different types of organisms get the energy they need to survive? How do different types of organisms get the energy they need to survive?

Lesson 1: Animal Adaptations Big Idea: How do organisms survive in their environment? GLE 0407.5.1 Analyze physical and behavioral adaptations that enable organisms to survive in their environment.GLE 0407.5.1 Analyze physical and behavioral adaptations that enable organisms to survive in their environment. SPI 0407.5.1 Determine how a physical or behavioral adaptation can enhance the chances of survival.SPI 0407.5.1 Determine how a physical or behavioral adaptation can enhance the chances of survival. Lesson 1 Objectives Explain what an adaptation is.Explain what an adaptation is. Provide examples of how adaptations help animals survive in their habitats.Provide examples of how adaptations help animals survive in their habitats.

Guiding Question Throughout Lesson 1: How does natural selection explain how organisms have changed over time? Conceptual Strand 5 – Heredity A rich variety of complex organisms have developed in response to a continually changing environment.

Engage page 102 Engage page 102 How does the humming ‘s bird’s body help it to survive? to survive? What would happen if all other birds had a What would happen if all other birds had a hummingbird’s body? hummingbird’s body? They would all get nectar the same way and there would not be enough food for all the birds. Its long beak helps it to get nectar from flowers.

Look and Wonder pages 102: Could this bird survive without its long and narrow beak? No, it would not be able to reach the nectar that it needs for food.

Does the shape of a bird’s beak affect what it eats? Today you will explore how the shape of a bird’s beak affects the kind of food the bird eats. Your objective is to predict which material represents a specific kind of beak. Draw conclusions and fill in the graphic organizer with your conclusions. Explore

Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive in its environment.

Camouflage A trait in which an animal hides by blending in with its environment.

Locomotion Movement from place to place.

Mimicry An adaptation in which one kind of organism looks like another. Hawkmoth Caterpillar mimics a local poisonous snake.

Hibernate When an animal’s body activities slow down and it lives off body fat.

Every habitat has its challenges. Animals can meet those challenges with the right set of traits. These traits help them meet their needs. Explain What are adaptations? Pages 104/105

Explain What are adaptations? Pages 104/105 Traits can be physical characteristics… Like a bird’s beak. Beaks are shaped a specific way so that it can get the food it needs to survive. The trunk of an elephant helps it grasp things and feed itself.

Explain What are adaptations? Pages 104/105 Adaptations are traits that help an organism survive in its environment. A camel’s hump stores fat and water for times when there is not much food available. Its hooves are thick to withstand the heat of the desert. They can close their nostrils to keep out sand. A polar bear has thick fur to help keep it warm in polar climates.

Explain What are adaptations? Pages 104/105 Other animals that live in the deserts have adaptations to help them survive. A sandgrouse is a desert bird with feathers that soak up water. This allows it to carry water to its young in the nest. The kangaroo rat gets water from the seeds it eats. To stay cool in the hot desert, the fennec fox has large ears that give off heat. It also has thinner fur than its relatives in cooler climates.

USING THE VISUALS : Which type of environment are these organisms suited for?Which type of environment are these organisms suited for? 22 Evaluate What are adaptations? Pages 104/105 Quick Check 1.Predict What might happen to a Tennessee animal if was moved to a hot desert? 2.Critical Thinking How are an eagle’s claws and a giraffe’s neck examples of adaptations? It might not survive because it is not adapted to live in a dry environment. Tennessee has more moisture in the form of rain and snow. Both are adaptations that help the animals get food.

Evaluate What are adaptations? Pages 104/105 What is the Main Idea of this selection? Think about these questions while you formulate the main idea. 1.Think of an animal with one or more characteristics that make the animal suitable for a specific environment. 2. Which characteristics help this organism to survive? 3. How might this organism be affected if it were placed in another environment?

Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 There are five other kinds of adaptations that help animals survive in their environments. BEHAVIORSHibernatingMigratingCAMOUFLAGEMIMICRYDEFENSE LOCOMOTION LOCOMOTION

Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 Animals may leave their habitats when the weather becomes cold or their food sources become low. This is called migration. Behaviors like MigrationHibernation Some animals hibernate to avoid the cold. During hibernation, the animal’s body activities slow down and it lives off body fat.

Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 Some animals blend in with their environment. This adaptation is called camouflage. It helps the animal hide. 27 Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 When one kind of living thing looks like another kind, it is called mimicry. MIMICRY Hover fly Honey bee Flatworm Sea slug Sticks Walking Stick Snake Hawkmoth Caterpillar

Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 Animals often have body parts for defense or protection. Some have poison glands in their jaws. Some have hard spines on the outside of their bodies. DEFENSES

Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 Locomotion is the movement from place to place. Animals have different adaptations for movement. Whales have fins. Insects have wings. Birds have hollow bones so that they are lighter and aids in flight. LOCOMOTION

Explain What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 USE THE VISUALS Study the photos on 106/107. Which animals are using camouflage? Which animals are using camouflage? How does a hedgehog protect itself from predators? How does a hedgehog protect itself from predators? Why would an animal not bother a hover fly?Why would an animal not bother a hover fly? What else appears to be in the dormouse’s nest? What else appears to be in the dormouse’s nest?

Evaluate What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 Quick Check 1.Predict Would you find an animal that hibernates in a tropical rain forest? Why or why not? 2.Critical Thinking Why do you think most poisonous animals do not have camouflage? No, most animals hibernate to avoid the cold. Poisonous animals usually do not need to hide because predators avoid attacking them.

Evaluate What are some other adaptations of animals? Pages 106/107 What is the Main Idea of this selection? Think about these questions while you formulate the main idea. 1.In what ways does camouflage and other adaptations help animals survive?
