Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... WP 8: Application of LCA to support optimization processes. Paris, 2-3 October 2003 Mario Tarantini....................................... TOWEF0

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Summary table of “LCA” products

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Performed activities LCA reports for I06 and I09 companies have been issued; LCA study on selected processes of I02 company has been carried out TEAM software model of selected B02 and B05 products has been completed; Format of database of process specific LCA inventories has been defined. An ENEA server for hosting the Ecobilan software has been made ready.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Functional unit We choose the following functional unit for all the companies: Production of 100 kg of selected fabric All the environmental impacts are calculated for this reference flow

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... General flowchart of I06 “LCA” products Desizing&Scouring Dyeing PES Dyeing FLAX Antistatic Finishing Softening Waste Water Treatment Plant fabric Manufactured fabric Water Waste Water

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Analysed production alternatives in I06 firm We analysed the following products: Stuck Flax-Pes Fabric dyed with light colours (system A) Stuck Flax-Pes Fabric dyed with dark colours (system B) Not Stuck Flax-Pes Fabric dyed with light colours (system C)

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Main conclusion for I06 company (1) Flax dyeing is the main contributor to all environmental impact categories (except eutrophication ) of system A, because of the high liquor ratio of O192 overflow and the consequent higher consumption of steam and chemicals for dyeing 100 kg of Flax-PES fabric Steam production is a “hot spot” for several impact categories with a contribution from 40% to 94%.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Main conclusion for I06 company (2) Production of chemicals is the dominant contributor to air acidification, human toxicity and photochemical oxidant formation and contributes significantly to all other categories except terrestrial ecotoxicity. Among the used chemicals, the production of sodium sulphate used for the dyeing of flax in System A has by far the highest impact, because of the big quantities used in this process.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Main conclusion for I06 company (3) Electric energy production is an important pollutant source mainly for acidification and ecotoxicity categories, because of the heavy use of fossil fuels for the production of electric energy in Italy.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... General flowchart of I09 “LCA products”

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Analysed production alternatives in I09 firm In this study two silk yarn product alternatives were analysed: Silk yarn dyed with dark colours (System A); Charged silk yarn dyed with dark colours (System B);

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Water consumption for system A

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Main conclusions for I09 company (1) Water consumption outside the company (mainly for electric energy and chemical production) is negligible when compared to in-company processes; HT Scouring of silk yarn (system A) is the most significant process (38-65% contribution) for several impact categories mainly because of its relevant thermal energy requirement.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Main conclusions for I09 company (2) Production of chemicals (mainly Acetic acid used in dyeing and softener finishing) has significant contribution to aquatic ecotoxicity and photochemical oxidant formation (18-25%). There is a relevant lack of data on chemicals production that was highlighted by sensitivity analysis

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... General conclusions (1) After the completion of LCA studies of I06,I09,I02 companies the following general conclusion can be drawn: Water used within the companies largely exceed the water used outside the company gates mainly for chemicals and electric energy production. Steam production gives a dominant contribution to several impact categories (typically greenhouse effect, depletion of resources, terrestrial ecotoxicity) because of the environmental impact of methane extraction and burning; more efficient liquor ratios of equipment will bring benefits on these categories too.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... General conclusions (2) Electricity production shows relevant impact mainly on air acidification and toxicity related categories, because of the large use of fossil fuels for the production of electricity in Italy. Chemicals production impact is not negligible. The performed bibliographic research on chemicals inventories and the sensitivity analysis of the LCA studies evidenced a significant lack of data. This lack of data will not influence the comparison of innovative water management scenarios as long as the chemicals use in the company will not significantly change.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... General conclusions (3) WWTP environmental impact is always very modest except for air acidification and human toxicity in I09 company (contribution of 20% due to electricity consumption)

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... LCA database A document with validated inventories of selected textile processes will be issued. The following format has been selected.

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... LCA database format (1)

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... LCA database format (2)

Paris, 2-3 October 2003....................................... PROT-INN M. Tarantini....................................... Next steps. To complete the LCA of the selected products and to issue the LCA reports; To finalize the analysis of process specific modules of LCA database; To support the analysis of innovative water management scenarios.
