Senior Design Fall 2014 ECE Department and Center for Clean Energy Engineering Emily Simonelli Lindsay Sullivan Taniya Singh United Illuminating in Orange, CT 10/15/2014 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2014 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)

Avoided Costs What are the costs being avoided by saving a certain amount of energy each year? Total Resource Cost: The costs that are needed to provide the device Incentive Cost: Utility company cost incentive provided per device Fours Measure Periods: -Winter Off-Peak -Winter On-Peak -Summer Off-Peak -Summer On-Peak *On Peak = Monday-Friday 6am-10pm **Winter = November- April 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2013 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)

Generation (capacity): The costs of having the power plant in place Transmission: How to transfer the power into the substations Distribution: The process from the substations to the client 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2013 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)

Cost Benefit Inputs (electric energy tool) Impact Factors Electric Savings Capacity Savings Non-Electric Benefits 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2013 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)

Cost-Benefit Definitions Free-ridership: The percentage of customers who would have bought the product without the incentive Spillover: percentage of customers who buy the product that aren’t part of the program. Realization Rate: The actual savings compared to the expected savings Coincidence Factor: The chance that a saving will occur during each measure period DRIPE: Demand Reduction Induced Price Effects (explained in next slide). Emissions Credit Value: What is the emissions savings per KW/Hr Raw Value: Cumulative value of money based off of time 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2013 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)

DRIPE Full form: Demand Reduction Induced Price Effects Run the most efficient power plants first (when load isn’t too high) cheapest power plants run first Example: winter is estimated 6.8 cents. DRIPE for this year is an additional 0.5 cents (additional savings). DRIPE is calculated for different periods throughout the year Original intention: calculated energy efficiency using DRIPE to avoid building new power plants. 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2013 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)

Updated Goals What are the inputs? Flowcharts are a good start. The Energy Efficiency planning use to be done yearly and is now switched to every 3 years. UI would like an update for the 3rd year plan. Would like a model for years 2016-2018. The Residential part of the excel sheet needs to be cleaned-up first. May not combine gas and electric anymore. 10/13/2014 Copyright © 2013 – Advanced Power Electronics & Electric Drives Lab (APEDL)
