10. Let’s try another one. prob / lem Look for the first vowel in the word. What do you see? What consonant is right after the vowel?

11. Closed Syllable prob / lem You’ve found the first VC pattern. If a vowel is followed by a consonant we call it a closed syllable.

12. Next, prob / lem If it is a closed syllable the vowel will make a short sound. What is o’s short sound?

13. What comes after the VC prob / lem VC / What comes after the letter b? Is it a vowel or a consonant?

14. What comes after the VC prob / lem VC / C You’re right! It’s a consonant!

15. What comes after the VC prob / lem VC / C What comes after the letter l? Is it a vowel or a consonant?

16. What comes after the VCC prob / lem VC / CV Right again! It is a vowel!

17. Blend the word! prob / lem VC / CV A VCCV pattern let’s you know that there are two syllables. It also let’s you know that the vowels make their short sounds.
