LOTF – Chapter 2 First Assembly  Boy with a birthmark introduces idea of a “beast”  Boy disappears, proving that humans are expendable on the island Foreshadowing  “It’s a good island….” irony  The forcibly remove Piggy’s glasses to start the fire Theme= the breakdown of civilized/socialized behavior  Introduction to the concept of anarchy  Characters operate for personal gain and not for the gain of community  Ralph tries to maintain the order of the group, but others don’t seem to care.  Beast is introduced by the least legitimate source

LOTF-Chapter 4 Characterization  Golding’s physical description of the characters shows the passage of time: darker skin, lighter and longer hair, dirty  Roger’s malicious nature is demonstrated. While Henry torments a sea creature (“hunt and control”), Roger torments Henry. Roger emerges as an evil force although the rules “in his head” keep him from hitting Henry. His actions foreshadow future events.  Jack paints his face, which “frees him.” Completes the act of killing, which emphasizes the recurring theme: the breakdown of civilized behavior  Sam ‘n’ Eric join the hunt; society of followers, mostly out of fear  Ralph spots a ship, races to the top of the mountain, sees smoldering fire. He blames Jack (Piggy agrees).  Jack returns with boys and dead pig, chanting (taboo). Breaks Piggy’s glasses when he hits Piggy (breaks the ability to “see,” poses obstacle to knowledge, permanently damages the future-foreshadowing) Parallels  Jack hunts and kills pigs; Henry, sea creatures  Ralph orders fire to be kept; Jack, boys on the hunt The boys are still okay, but they could have been rescued.
