CGPP Nigeria program Use of Mobile Phone Technology for Improved Quality of Reporting CGPP Nigeria program Use of Mobile Phone Technology for Improved Quality of Reporting Samuel Usman, MD Director, Nigeria Secretariat, CGPP Samuel Usman, MD Director, Nigeria Secretariat, CGPP

 Appreciate the rationale for using mobile phones in reporting data in the Polio program  Understand how mobile phones have improved quality of reporting  Appreciate how CGPP and the Polio program in general use mobile phones to improve quality of reporting  Understand other important uses of the smartphone in reporting

3 Improvement in Nigeria Polio Program Total Case Count: 2012- 2015 57% reduction 89% reduction

 Community volunteers (about 15,000) became the backbone of the program in conducting House-to-House (H2H) mobilization and awareness raising for people to accept the Polio vaccine  CGPP and UNICEF engaged a large number of community volunteers (CVs) who were generating a large volume of data from remote and sometimes inaccessible areas  CGPP works in the most insecure and difficult areas in Nigeria’s Northeast which made use of mobile technology in those areas an added advantage  There was the need to ensure these data was accurately captured, stored and disseminated in a timely manner from every location  Mobile or smartphones became the way out of to achieve accuracy and quality reporting Rationale For Mobile Phones In The Polio program

 Reports from over 20,000 settlements are daily aggregated and collated using smartphones in the 11 Polio High Risk (HR) states of Nigeria  Large number of vaccination teams (over 150,000) are being monitored real-time using the Vaccine Tracking System (VTS)  CGPP is collecting and disseminating data from over 1,500 settlements where it has CVs working supporting Nigeria’s Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI)  CGPP Mid-term Evaluation was use conducted using smartphone with improved effectiveness and efficiency over the baseline which was done manually  These data is used on a real-time basis for program management and overall decision making  Team performance and compliance to the Microplan is also monitored using the smartphones to ensure program quality and enhanced team performance  smartphone is also used to identify, monitor, report on and also track missed settlements which translates to tracking the potential missed children in that settlement How Mobile Phones Have Improved the Polio Program

Vaccination Tracking System The Nigeria Vaccination Tracking System (VTS) application was developed to support polio eradication activities in Northern Nigeria The VTS process includes several components and focuses primarily on the vaccination days of the polio campaign GPS tracking shows the progress of teams vaccinating children against Polio during polio campaigns

Elements of the VTS

Vaccination Tracking System facilitates follow up of missed settlements 10 The Missed Settlement List (MSL) is generated at end of day 4 for use in day 5 mop up After mop up activities, the post campaign MSL is validated at three levels The final list is then shared with the government and partners: For mop up and in between round activities Investigation of vaccination coverage

ODK TECHNOLOGY Dashboard technologies is the basic software used to collect, store and disseminate data by the Polio program

What is Open Data kit(ODK)? Open Data Kit (ODK) is a suite of tools to help organizations collect, aggregate and visualize their data. ODK Collect is powerful phone based replacement for your paper forms. ODK Collect is built on the Android platform and can collect a variety of form data types: text, location, photos, video, audio, and barcodes. Much of this content was adapted from the UC Berkeley Human Rights Center's post entitled located on the ODK site at http://code.google.com/p/open- datakit/wiki/TrainingGuide.

Why Open Data kit(ODK)? ODK is an open source software that is very efficient and easy to use. It uses the concept of xml to convert paper forms to mobile forms for easy data entry, data verification, validation and retrieval for Data analysis including Mapping analysis of exact point of interests (POI). ODK was introduced along side with Form hub technology to ensure that real time data was available the Polio campaign and during the Ebola outbreak for EOC Management Decision making. Reports were reeled out 75% faster than the manual method that was used at the initial stage of the outbreak. Much of this content was adapted from Ebola Emergency Operations Center EEOC.

How ODK and Dashboard Technology is used e.g. In Ebola containment The Data captured via these mobile forms were stored up on a cloud server which was then used to prepare Sit Reps everyday and also alarmed the system via sms and email when a contact becomes symptomatic or lab results ready for a suspect case. This was done in real time and was efficient. Much of this content was adapted from Ebola Emergency Operations Center EEOC.
