In the 5th AD century three Germanic tribes invaded Britain.
The Angles /ˈæŋɡlz̩/, the Saxons /ˈsæksənz/ and the Jutes /dʒuːts/ invaded Britain. They came from north-western Europe. tribe /traɪb/ a group of people who live together invade /ɪnˈveɪd/ attack AD stand for Anno Domini; the year Jesus was born

In the 8th century AD the Vikings invaded Britain.
They came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

In 1066 the Normans conquered Britain.
They came from northern France. conquer /ˈkɒŋkər/ to take control of a foreign land. For the next 3 hundred years people spoke French and English in Britain. The ordinary people spoke English and the aristocracy spoke French.
