The City Bayeux has a perfectly preserved medieval ensemble, magnificent cathedral and world famous tapestry It’s a smaller more intimate city Despite the large crowds of summer tourists, it’s a far more enjoyable place to visit

Location Bayeux is located in northern France about 166 miles northwest of Paris It lies on the Aure River in Normandy and is not far from the English Channel

History The Battle of Hastings was a fight to the throne between English nobleman, Harold, and William Duke of Normandy

History continued When Harold became king, William felt he deserved it so he brought his army to England to fight for the position

The Battle of Hastings The battle lasted 14 years It ended with the death of Harold, allowing William to become King of England Historians believe that if William had not won the battle, England would not have become the most powerful country in the world

Bayeux Tapestry The most unique attraction in Bayeux Tells the story of the Battle of Hastings in a visual way so that people who cannot read could understand

Bayeux Tapestry It is a work of embroidery that hangs in the town’s cathedral It is 230 feet long and 3 feet in height and made of wool embroidered onto linen

Food Specialties Apples are an essential ingredient of many Normandy specialties such as There are also ranges of cheese that as specific to the Normandy region

Shopping Specialties The main area for shopping is the rue St Jean There are great little shops for souvenirs, porcelain, and antiquities There is a weekly market held on Saturdays

Must See Attractions Parts of the main street is a pedestrian zone dividing the town in half, north to south, with major sights to the south There are many more places to go and see other than the Tapestry such as Cathédral Notre-Dame Baron Gerard Museum Hôtel du Doyen Bayeux Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum The Bayeux war Cemetery
