1 Section 2.7 Linear Inequalities

2 Inequality signs: >, ≥, <, ≤ and ≠ The graph of an inequality divides the plane into halves. One half of the plane will satisfy the inequality The other half won’t. The line that separates the halves of the plane is called: the boundry line. Linear Inequalities

4 Graphing Linear Inequalities: Steps a.) Start by graphing it as if it is a linear equation. c.) Shade the 1/2 plane that satisfies the inequality. To decide where to shade pick a point and test it. If the inequality “reads” true shade that side If the inequality “reads” false shade the other side b.) Then decide whether the line should be solid or dashed (Solid if the inequality is ≥ or ≤) (Dashed if the inequality is > or <)

5 1.) Graph: y > 2x+3 a. ) Linear eqn. b.) Solid or dashed? c.) Shade: Test: (1,1) No Shade the other side Dashed y = 2x + 3 Test a point that is simple Don’t test a point on the line
