1 “Bottle It Up” Product Design With the Problem Solving Process Written by Sony Gala

2 ENGR-EET-3: Students will explain the engineering design process. –Examine the engineering design attributes –Demonstrate the principles of research and design ENGR-EET-4: Students will demonstrate an understanding for a technological world through hands-on projects. – Apply the engineering design process ENGR-EET-7: Students will develop leadership skills and work ethics. –Demonstrate work ethics within the classroom and lab environment.

3 Design Problem You are part of a design team for a local soft drink company. The CEO of the company has called upon the design team to design a new label for their new soft drink. It is important to decide on an eye- catching label and name to attract consumers.

4 You may not use any existing soft drink names or logos The final design should be no larger than the original bottle label. The final design should include the following: –Logo, company name –Product name, flavor type –Nutrition facts –Ingredients –Barcode label –size (ex: 16.9 fl oz, 500ml) –Motto –Phone number or website address –Recycle symbol –Etc. (anything else you research) The final label must be no larger than 41/2 inches x 81/2 inches

5 Form groups of two Students must bring in a clean empty plastic soda or soft drink bottle. The bottle must not be any larger than 20 oz. Each group will maintain a portfolio of the problem solving steps. Complete steps 1 and 2 of the problem solving process.

6 Step 3 Copy requirements from slide 6. Use the dictionary to define the following words: –Logo, trademark, registered trademark, copyright. Use the Internet to look up existing logos for soft drinks.

7 Step 4 Each student in the group will brainstorm on: –3 names for the drink –2 names for the company –3 logo designs –2 mottos

8 Step 5 – final idea Select the final idea for your group, on a blank sheet of paper do the following: –Soft drink name –Name of the company –Logo design – Colored –Motto Cola Rocks

9 To open Word 2007 –Click on Start, Student Local, –Applications, Microsoft Office, Word Save files –Go to s:\students –Go to tlab\6aTechEd\Bottle It Up Projects\ –Name your file

10 Students will use Microsoft Word Explore using Insert Shapes Do not use any clipart Use word art for your soft drink name.

11 Measure Label size Peel the original label off the plastic bottle. Measure the length and width in inches Measure to the closest sixteenth’s of an inch. Width in inches Length in inches Label

12 Paper Setup To change paper direction – –Click on page Layout –Click on Orientation –Select Landscape

13 Create Label in Word Ruler on top and left should be visible. If not, select View from the menu, check Ruler. Go to Insert shapes, select rectangle Begin to draw a rectangle from the top left margin. Draw the rectangle based on the original label measurements. This is your label. All your work should be within this rectangle.

14 Complete Logo design and drink name Use arrow from shapes to complete the recycle symbol Use text box from shapes to complete motto. Use text box from shapes to complete contact information (address, phone number, web address etc).

Size 1 can _______________ Amount per serving Calories 0 _______________ Total Fat 0g0% Sodium 40mg2% Total Carb 0g0% Protein og _______________ Not a significant source of fat cal. 547667 Decide on ingredients based on flavor, color and caffeine content. Create a box without borders to write all ingredients. Create a barcode label Create a nutrition facts label. Format the table to look like the original label.

16 Let teacher check the label size with your measurements Print label, color background and then cut out the label. Turn label in to teacher for lamination. Fill bottle with water, add color to make desired drink. Attach label to the bottle with a piece of tape. Turn in steps 1-5 (numbered and stapled) as the design portfolio.
