Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  The context is Paul’s attempt to convince the Jews to leave the law & be “married to Christ”  To illustrate how such a “marriage” is proper, Paul uses the law that governs the physical relationship between a husband & his wife  This illustration is similar to Eph 5:22-33

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  The law has jurisdiction over a person as long as that person lives under that law v. 1  Because of the marriage law that has been in force “from the beginning” & reinforced by Jesus, marriage is governed by the same principle Gen 2:18-24 Mt 19:9 cp. Mt 22:29-30

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  The two scenarios portrayed in this passage –  A woman has married another man while her original husband is still alive Ë A woman has married another man after her original husband has died  Obviously, the death of the first husband is what differentiates between the 2 scenarios Ù ADULTERY Ù NO ADULTERY

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  The real possibility that can exist in marriage… one can be bound to one (original spouse) while being married to another (subsequent spouse)  The marriage discussed in v. 3a is adulterous  The implied divorce leading to the adulterous 2nd marriage is unlawful or unscriptural cp. Mt 19:9

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  To illustrate these principles, consider Mk 6:14-29  Re: the commotion surrounding Jesus, Herod was convinced just as most were…He was John the Baptist raised from the dead v. 16  John had previously been beheaded for condemning Herod’s marriage to Herodias – his former sister-law-law v. 18

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  To illustrate these principles, consider Mk 6:14-29  When John said, “It is not lawful…” he did not have the Law of Moses in mind cp. Deut 24:1-4  John had to have been referencing the original marriage law God enacted “at the beginning” for all marriages Gen 2:18-24 Mt 19:4-6

Biblical Examinations Of An Emotional & Controversial Subject DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Rom 7:1-4  To illustrate these principles, consider Mk 6:14-29  For Herodias to be “Philip’s wife” while being married to Herod is an accommodative use of the terminology cp. 2 Sam 11:3, 26 12:9-10  Otherwise, Herodias is guilty of bigamy  An important distinction to properly understand and apply this text in the M/D/R discussion
