Meaning Some verbs change meaning depending upon the past tense in which it is used

AVOIR IMP = ‘had/owned’ “Je n’avais pas assez temps.” PC = had/got/received “J’ai eu un accident” (I had/got into)

CONNAÎTRE IMP = knew/was familiar with “Vous la connaissiez bien” PC = met “Vous avez connu Michel hier”

DEVOIR IMP = was supposed to [whether you did or not] “Tu devais partir à midi” PC = must have/had to Tu as dû partir à midi

POUVOIR IMP = could/was capable [whether did or not] Il pouvait mentir PC = could/was able to/managed to {neg = couldn’t/wasn’t able to} Il a pu mentir Il n’a pas pu mentir

SAVOIR IMP = knew Elle savait l’adresse PC = learned/found out Elle a su l’adresse

VOULOIR IMP = wanted Ils voulaient partir PC = tried/decided to (neg = refused) Ils ont voulu partir Ils n’ont pas voulu partir
