1 History Year founded: 1626 by Peter Minuit and others. Original name, The original name was The Province of New York Reason for founding: Trade and Profits. Named after duke of york and albany the brother of King Charles the 2nd.

2 History The founding of the quaker colony of west jersey in 1664, the duke of york, propietsry of the province of new york, assigned to lord berkeley and sir feorge carteret the tract of country to the east of the delaware river, and extending to the hudson river and the atlantic ocean.

3 Economy ●How did the colony sustain itself? ●Agriculture - New York had many crops, such as wheat, cabbage, rice, onions, oats, leeks, etc. Not every farmer would grow all of these, but they would trade between farms. The most basic food was corn though. ●Cash Crop - The cash crop in New York was corn. It was very common for people to be eating corn in their household. Corn was the primary staple food of every farm. ●Manufacturing - They were able to manufacture plows, tools, kettles, nails made out of iron ore. They were also able to build ships.

4 Government What type of government did they have? Proprietary Colony - New York and New jersey began as proprietary colonies, but later became royal colonies. By 1763 most colonies surrendered to the Crown and became Royal Colonies. All lamd belonged to the king and it was his perogative to divide. Royal Colony - A Royal colony is a type of colonial administration of the English then later British Empire. A royal colony was ruled by a governor appointed by the monarch. In 1775 New York was governed as a Royal colony. How it worked - The colony was run by a governor appointed by the King of England. The governor made all the laws and there was little self-government. The colonists gained some freedom but that didn’t last long.
