2 How did Romans build roads?  They find an area.  They clear the area.  They level the area.  They lay the road.

3 Clearing the area. They found some land that they liked and chopped down trees that were in their way with tools.

4 Levelling the land. They used a surveying tool called a groma to make the land straight.

5 Building the road. The first material they used was sand to make road smooth. The last material they used was rocks because if the road was flooded they could walk across them.

6 Why was it important to have good roads? To transport people and goods from place to place. To move the army. Better roads made better transport of trade goods. Good communication across the empire.
