Stone Church of England Combined School “To enable all to achieve their highest potential” Read, Write, Inc Parents Workshop

Welcome Tuesday 6 th October 2015

Phonics We believe that every child has the right to be able to read, understand and enjoy text. In order to do this, children need to recognise sounds and letters and be able to build up and break down words. They also need to understand the word and the context it is used in. If children can do this they will be able to read and understand – thus opening a gateway to learning. In phonics, children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend them to read and spell.

Why Read, Write, Inc? The Read Write Inc. Programme. Read Write Inc. developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching phonics. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK's primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/par ent-tutorial-1-understanding-read-write-inc- phonics/

Reception Read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge Take home Phonics storybooks to share Read with fluency and expression Learn to spell using known sounds Write confidently by practising what they want to write out loud first Work well with a partner. http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/sou nd-pronunciation-guide/

Pupils work in ability groups which are organised by their performance on R.W.I. phonic tests. Pupils are re-tested during the year on a half termly basis or after discussions with the group leaders and then children are reorganised accordingly. When children finish the programme and can read competently they begin more structured Guided Reading sessions. If children still require phonics teaching in Key Stage 2 small groups are organised to meet their needs. Phonics lessons occur each day, as the continuity and pace of the programme is key to accelerating the progress of children’s reading development. Sessions take place at 9:00am daily and last for 30 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9LYMLUpuFA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9LYMLUpuFA Year 1 & Year 2
