OBESITY: It’s Epidemic  Health 8 Ms. Boland

Why do we need to learn about this? Obesity (the condition of having an excessive amount of body fat) is epidemic Companies spend billions of dollars on tantalizing ad campaigns to persuade us to buy “junk food” And junk food tends to be cheap..an important fact given our economic climate Automakers are now designing larger safety seats to accommodate overweight preschoolers. About 33.8% adults are obese. About 17% (or 12.5 million kids!!) of children and adolescents aged 2— 19 years are obese. http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html

Definition: The condition of having an EXCESSIVE amount of body fat.

Did You Know? WHERE excess body fat is distributed around your body could be a significant factor in how seriously your health is at risk. 5 What is overweight? Obese? BMI between 25-29 = Overweight BMI over 39 = Obese http://bmi.emedtv.com/bmi-calculator/bmi-calculator.html BUT, MUSCLE IS HEAVIER THAN BODY FAT!! For example, Shaquille O’Neal’s BMI says he’s OBESE !

Why Focus on Body Composition? Muscle weighs MORE than fat Muscle takes LESS space than body fat Body fat is “stored” energy…we don’t need that much of it..for the most part we have food readily available Muscles helps us move and be productive humans and this is good So when people say they “want to lose weight”, they really mean they want to “lose BODY FAT”

Prevention.. Don’t Let Your CHOICES Lead to Illness! Exercise more, eat less! Be consistent. It’s a “life”style not a “diet” or “program” MODERATION is the best policy..the 80-20 rule! Reduce soda intake..TRY FLAVORED SELTZER WATER Eat clean..avoid foods with high fat, sugar, salt, and cholesterol. All of these are found in fast foods…. Read the ingredient list on a food label.
