Gen 8:1-12 God Remembered Noah and his family took 120 years to build the ark – exercise of faith. (Gen 6:3) First 150 day without sensing God’s presence. Then “God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark..” (Gen 8:1) Only 8 humans in the ark. Rest of the global population perished in the flood that lasted more than a year. God’s Judgment for sin. Spent more than a year in the ark. Dove brings back an olive branch – a symbol of peace with God. (Gen 8:11)

Gen 8:13-22 God Instructed I Pet 3:20: “.. the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you – not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience, - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” The ark going through the flood is like baptism in Christ. Dying to sin and rising to newness of life. First thing Noah did when he came out was to build an altar and sacrifice the clean animals. God is pleased. Gen 8:20-22: “I will never again curse the ground on account of man.. and never again destroy every living thing as I have done.”

Gen 9:1 – 17 God Blessed V1,7 “And God blesses Noah and his sons “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth”. All of mankind comes from the wives of Noah’s 3 sons. Mothers of all nations – Happy Mothers Day! v3 “Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you.” Vegetarian to omnivore. V4-6. Lifeblood. Capital punishment for murder. V8-17. Everlasting covenant “all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” V12 -16 Rainbow a sign of the covenant.

The First Rains and Seasons? Genesis 1:6-7 (KJV): “And God said, 'Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water'. So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. “ Genesis 2:4b-5 (NASB) “…in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven. Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth… But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground." First mention of rain in Gen 8. May suggest that rains first fell during the floods. Also, God establishes the seasons. Gen 8:22 (fossilised trees have been found without annular rings)

Universal Flood? Flood came by supernatural intervention. Gen 7:3 ‘I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made.” Gen 7:19b ‘The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered.” Gen 7:21-23 “All flesh that moved on the earth perished. All… died. Thus He blotted out every living thing …” Clearly, God’s word indicates a universal flood. But sceptics ask “Where did all the water go?”

Where did all the water go? Draining of the flood was likewise a miracle. –Gen 8:2-3: “fountains…of the deep… were stopped… and the waters returned…” –Ps 104:8: “the mountains rose, the valleys sank down” –Likely new and much deeper ocean basins were formed to drain the flood waters and create the land mass as we know it today. –Places like Grand Canyon testify to this.

Application While a universal flood will never occur again, God has revealed that the world will be judged by fire. "...the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire!" (II Peter 3:12) Rev 20:11-12: And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. Let us continue to share Christ with our loved ones that some may receive mercy and eternal life.
