There are two types of basic products.
Types of Products There are two types of basic products. Consumer Products Products designed for personal or home use. Industrial Products Products designed for use by other businesses. Sometimes products can fit into both categories.

Types of Consumer Products
Consumer Products can be broken down into 4 different types. Depending on the type, the process for marketing the product can change, so it is important to know which types your product is. The four types are: Convenience Goods Shopping Goods Specialty Goods Unsought Goods

Convenience Goods Convenience Goods are: Inexpensive items
Purchased regularly with out a great deal of thought. Things that you can purchase at a convenience store would be examples. Ex – milk, eggs, bread, etc.

Shopping Goods Shopping goods are Higher priced
Purchased less frequently Require more thought Sold in fewer places Require more promotion Ex – cars, houses, furniture, lawn mower

Specialty Goods Specialty Goods are:
Products that customers insist upon having. They are willing to search for these items. These are not necessarily items that are needed. They are not promoted as much. Priced much higher and sold in fewer places. Ex – Name Brand/Designer items (like sunglasses activity)

Unsought Goods Unsought Goods are:
Goods that customers do not shop for There is not a strong need for these goods Most customers really don’t want to spend their money on these things These things are very difficult to market Ex – life insurance, funeral services,
