Types of Careers in Fashion 0 The fashion industry encompasses more than design and buying careers. 0 Careers opportunities exist in each of the four segments of the fashion industry: 0 Textiles 0 Fashion promotion 0 Design and manufacturing 0 Retailing

Textile 0 Research Scientist: 0 Develops new synthetic fibers 0 Textile Designer/Artist: 0 Creates new patterns and designs that are used in making fabrics. 0 Textile Colorist: 0 Decides which colors consumers will buy. 0 Converter: 0 Responsible for how the finished fabric will look. 0 Marketing Analyst: 0 Conducts marketing research and evaluates information. 0 Sales Representative: 0 Presents the company’s products and services.

Fashion Promotion 0 Art Director/Designer: 0 Develops advertising that will be placed in all forms of media. 0 Graphic Designer: 0 Produces the advertisements based on direction from the art designers. 0 Fashion Copywriter: 0 Writes advertising material for fashion-industry clients. 0 Display Designer: 0 Creates displays and is usually involved with special events and promotional activities. 0 Fashion Model: 0 Models clothing on the catwalk, for ads or for mail-order catalogs. 0 Photographer: 0 Photographs models, fashion apparel, and accessories.

Design and Manufacturing 0 Designer: 0 Designs clothing, etc. 0 Sample Maker: 0 Sews the designer’s sample. 0 Pattern Maker: 0 Makes the design into pattern pieces that can be used to produce garments. 0 Production Manager: 0 Oversees the design, manufacture, selling and delivery of fashion. 0 Piece-Goods Buyer: 0 Purchases the fabrics and trims. 0 Sales: 0 Sells products and provides service to retail buyers. 0 Market-Research Analyst: 0 Studies consumer habits.

Retail 0 Buyer: 0 Buys clothes and accessories for a store or department to sell 0 Associate Buyer: 0 Assists buyer in presenting merchandise to staff, tracking shipments, and calculating markdowns. 0 Merchandising Coordinator: 0 Makes sure retail stores are fully stocked. 0 Trend Researcher: 0 Analyzes and forecasts trends, makes purchase recommendations. 0 Store Manager: 0 Oversees all aspects of the store’s operation. 0 Sales Associate: 0 Sells fashion apparel and accessories in a retail store.
