Terraced Douro vineyards Douro Northeastern DOC known for its Port vineyards. Fortified wines from this region are labeled DOC Port, whereas unfortified wines are labeled DOC Douro. Delineated in 1756 and is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region Region was dedicated to Port production run by British firms from late 1600s to 1950s. In 1952, the winery Ferreira produced a dry, unfortified wine called Barca Velha, which became the first prominent table wine from the Douro. Demand has since grown for Douro table wines, and it now accounts for half of the region’s output Climate: Continental; hot and dry summers and long, cold winters Geography: Extremely mountainous, traversed by the Douro River. Hard soil of schist and granite. Vineyards were planted on terraces carved first by hand and later by dynamite Key wine: Rich, tannic reds from Port grapes (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz) Cuisine: Simple and reflects rugged terrain and long winters; smoked ham, spicy sausage, wild boar
