Section 10, Team 3: Caroline Suni, Clayton Dickerson, Alex Bedrin, and Donovan Killeen
2
* Designed and built a prototype of a velocity measurement mechanism * Installed directly into Xerox iGen4 * Current mechanism is imprecise * Mechanism can measure velocity +/- 0.25% tolerance * Key points: * easy to install * maintenance * cost effective
3
* Generated 5 unique designs for measuring velocity within the iGen4 * one design selected * Winning design implements the use of a roller, notch and sensor * Prototype, 3d models and working drawings were created
4
* Problem Statement * Current device yields rough estimates * Mission Statement * Design a device that measures velocity between 250 to 750 mm/s within a tolerance of +/- 0.25% * Design Specifications * Precise velocity * Cost effective * Easy manufacture, installation and maintenance * No impact on paper speed * Appropriate size

Double motion sensor Roller notch sensor Rolling notch switch Single motion sensor Ultrasonic sensor
9
* Lasers are most accurate form of measurement * Most cost effective * Most efficient * Rotating notch best way to measure velocity of paper * Design much more accurate than current igen mechanism
10
* Utilizes dual set of frictionless rollers * Located after drive roll * Spin according to speed of paper * Notch connected to rod breaks plane of laser * Occurs on each pass of the notch/roller system * Program measures average rotations per second and derive the velocity of the paper
13
Prototype Velocity Roller
14
* Working Mechanism : * Printer begins print cycle * Laser activates * Paper is fed into printer and cycle begins * Paper passes velocity measuring mechanism, and spins a “frictionless” roller * Notch on the end of the roller breaks the plane of the sensor as the paper spins it * Sensor measures time intervals of the notch rotating around the cylinder exactly once * Program divides this time by known circumference of rotating notch * … yielding an accurate average speed

* Cost Effective * Easy Maintenance * Compact Size, only 1.5 x 1.75 x 3.25 inches * Easy to Manufacture * Easy to install * Accurate
17
* Decreasing the diameter of the rod holding the notch * More rotations = more accurate * Closer estimation of rotations
18
* Team 3 designed and built a prototype of a system that measures the velocity of paper in the igen 4 * Velocity information used to make adjustments in the printing path * Less errors with image recognition
