Phonics is a way of teaching children to read They are taught how to - recognise sounds that each individual letter makes - Identify sounds different combinations of letters make – sh/ch/oo - blend the sounds - They use this to ‘de-code’ new words

Research shows that is it the most effective way of teaching young children to read - Please note most effective not the only way! - New Curriculum Children who are taught phonics tend to read more accurately

The week of June 15 th Every child will take the phonics screening check Each asked to read 40 words Some are real words Some are nonsense words The pass mark is 32/40

Setting for phonics – daily, attendance! Regular practice – in phonics lessons and in other lessons, and test Introducing nonsense words Guided reading Sending books home

Listen to your child read as much as possible When reading a ‘new’ word ask them to segment/sound out the word and then blend it. Then talk about what it means and help them to understand the story. Word games like ‘I-Spy’ can help teach children about sounds Ask children to read words on the shopping list, road signs, shops etc. Read to your child – get Dads reading

All children will be tested All will read 40 words – real and nonsense Week of 15 th June Pass mark is 32 Read, read, read!
