3.  Phonics is a way of teaching children to read  They are taught how to - recognise sounds that each individual letter makes - Identify sounds different combinations of letters make – sh/ch/oo - blend the sounds - They use this to ‘de-code’ new words

4.  Research shows that is it the most effective way of teaching young children to read - Please note most effective not the only way! - New Curriculum Children who are taught phonics tend to read more accurately

5.  The week of June 15 th  Every child will take the phonics screening check  Each asked to read 40 words  Some are real words  Some are nonsense words  The pass mark is 32/40

7.  Setting for phonics – daily, attendance!  Regular practice – in phonics lessons and in other lessons, and test  Introducing nonsense words  Guided reading  Sending books home

8.  Listen to your child read as much as possible  When reading a ‘new’ word ask them to segment/sound out the word and then blend it. Then talk about what it means and help them to understand the story.  Word games like ‘I-Spy’ can help teach children about sounds  Ask children to read words on the shopping list, road signs, shops etc.  Read to your child – get Dads reading

9.  All children will be tested  All will read 40 words – real and nonsense  Week of 15 th June  Pass mark is 32  Read, read, read!
