Version 2.0 4 Activity 2: Real World Problem Solving Will compare two different approaches to teaching real world problem solving. Work will be done in cooperative groups. Complete Handout 1 (one per group) Timekeepers Note: You will have about 25 minutes to complete the questions.

Version 2.0 5 Activity 2: Real World Problem Solving Helpful Tips Note the scale in the upper right-hand corner of the map. To estimate distance traveled, mark off distance traveled on a small piece of paper and compare to the scale on the map. If you have the distance the ship traveled and the time it took to travel that distance, what else can you determine? Why would this be helpful?

Version 2.0 6 Activity 3: Project Selection and Instructional Summary Select a “unique and compelling” Internet-based project or resource (course requirement). Instructor must review and approve all projects. Complete an Instructional Summary for the “unique and compelling” project you select In future workshops, you will develop an implementation plan and web page for this project.

Version 2.0 7 Concept Review: Unique and Compelling Three classifications of Internet-based educational applications include: Traditional, Innovative, and Unique and Compelling. Recall criteria for unique and compelling Internet applications: –Real Time Data (e.g. Gulf Stream Voyage) –Communication (e.g. Water Sampling Project) –Publishing Student Work (e.g. Sci-Journal)

Version 2.0 8 Week Five Reinforcement Activity If you have not yet identified a project: –use Handout 3 to help select a project –e-mail a brief description to your instructor for approval. E-mail your instructor if you need assistance. Once approved, complete the Instructional Summary in Handout 4 (via e-mail if preferred) and submit to your instructor.
