3  Realism started in France after the 1848 revolution  shows favor for democracy the term "realism" encompasses the period of time from the Civil War to the turn of the century..”  "the faithful representation of reality"

5  the Social Realists pledged to “fight the beautiful art”  They liked any style which appealed to the eye/ emotions

6  Artists - Realists attempted to portray the lives, appearances, problems, customs, and mores of the middle and lower classes  The Realists felt that painters should work from the life round them
