Religious reasons Some families are religious. Some religions have rules about food. Some religions also have rules about the way food is made. Jewish and Muslim families will only eat meat if the animal has been killed in a certain way. Before giving food to people, it is a good idea to check if they have any special food needs. Have a look at the table provided. How does this relate to working in a child care setting?

Kosher and halal- these are special ways of killing animals Fast- many religions have special times when food is not to be eaten

Special dietary requirements Religious requirements are not the only food restrictions. There are groups of people who may have other food needs. What could these be?

I do not eat meat or fish. I will eat eggs and diary products. I have a disease that means that I must be careful what I eat. I cannot have many sugary foods. I do not eat any food that has come from an animal. I only eat food that comes from plants.

A dietary need is when someone can not eat certain foods or drink certain drinks because they have a problem or for various reasons (being vegetarian etc.)

Check learning Muslims eat halal meat? Sikhs and Hindus can eat beef? Vegetarians do not eat meat? Jews do not eat shellfish? Vegans eat cheese and eggs?

Assessment Produce a poster which gives information on food restrictions for religious groups and special dietary requirements. Your poster must include: The food restrictions for people from FOUR religious groups Brief description of special dietary requirements for individuals THREE common foods which can cause allergic reactions for individuals
