Speed/Velocity Distance- the length of a path between two points. Displacement- the length and direction that an object has moved from its starting point. X X Distance Displacement

Speed: A position change in a certain amount of time. Speed = distance / time or v = d/t - usually measured in m/s Average Speed: d/t, where d is the total distance and t is the total time elapsed. X0X0 XfXf

Example- A jogger jogs 2 km in 10 min. Calculate the speed. Given: Distance = 2 km Time = 10 min Find: Speed Solution: S = d / t S = 2 km /10 min S =.2 km/min

Instantaneous Speed: The speed at a particular instant (this quantity is what a speedometer measures).

Velocity: Tells you how fast and what direction something is moving. Velocity = displacement/time, plus the direction (north, south... etc.) v  d /t
