The Pancreas The pancreas secretes insulin in response to glucose levels in the blood. Pancreatic fluid also contains enzymes that help neutralize stomach acid as it enters the small intestine.

Pancreatitis Inflammation of the pancreas Acute or Chronic Pancreatic enzymes are activated in the pancreas instead of the small intestine. Pancreatic enzymes are natural chemicals that help break down fats, proteins, and carbs.

Pancreatic Enzymes Lipase Works with bile from the liver to break down fat. Protease Breaks down proteins. Helps keep the intestine free of parasites. Amylase Breaks down carbohydrates into sugars

Signs and Symptoms Severe upper abdominal pain Nausea and vomiting (worsened with eating) Change in blood pressure Heart and respiratory rates elevated

Causes 80% of pancreatitis is cause from either alcohol or gallstones Gallstones are the common cause for acute pancreatitis Alcohol is the common cause for chronic pancreatitis Certain medications, smoking, cystic fibrosis, infection, injury to the abdomen, and pancreatic cancer

Treatment Morphine is generally used to stop the pain Antibiotics and various pain killers. If the pain is caused from gallstones you can have surgery to get them removed If your pain is caused from alcohol you must cease from drinking alcohol
