Ancient China Early Dynasties

Summary of Student Learning Introductory Activity  Students enjoyed the “Tallest Tower” activity  They made the connection between their work together and the work the Chinese did in order to survive in the Hunan River Valley.  We discussed the qualities of a good “leader” and how the Dynasties in Ancient China would vie for control of the area.

Summary of Student Learning Enabling Activity  Students used their textbook and suggested web sites to fill out a graphic organizer showing the years in power, rulers, philosophies and contributions of the Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han Dynasties.  They were so motivated that they decided to do their own web searches to find additional sites with information on Ancient China and the early dynasties!

Summary of Student Learning Culminating Activity  Students used the information they had compiled to create a timeline outlining the major facts for each Dynasty.  These timelines were then used as part of a three-dimensional display about Ancient China, which were featured at our annual “Open House”.

Summary of Student Learning Assessment  Student knowledge of Ancient Chinese Dynasties was evaluated with a written test.  As the graph shows, over 90% of the class demonstrated a clear understanding of the content required in the California State Standards.
