IEEE-ISTO Overview Greg Kohn Director, Technology and Programs IEEE Computer Society Standards Activity Board Philadelphia, PA - 2 November 2005

The IEEE-ISTO  15 November 1998 - approved by IEEE Board of Directors –Launched on 1 January 1999  Affiliated with the IEEE and the IEEE-SA  Independent, 501(c)(6) Non-Profit Corporation  Complement to the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA)

The IEEE-ISTO  What it is: –A financially self-supporting, complementary standards forum in which consortium-like standards development activity can be organized. Flexible, innovative, alternative development processes and procedures. –A forum not only to develop standards, but also to facilitate the activities that support implementation and acceptance of standards in the marketplace. –Extends the scope of standards activities the IEEE is able to support. –A recognition and response to the changes in the standards environment.

Offerings and Secretariat Resources  Strategic Planning and Implementation  Trademarks, Intellectual Property and Licensing  HQ Office and Identity  Record Keeping  Financial Management  Membership Support  General Promotion, Marketing, and Press Relations  Planning, Meeting Management and Forum Activities  Publication and Document Mgmt.  IP Mgmt. and Admin.  Conformance and Interoperability Testing  On-Line Support and Communications

IEEE-ISTO and Industry Programs  Maintain unique identity and flexibility in direction and actions  Operate under their own unique rules and procedures  Maintain complete control of its budget and operational expenses  Accommodate unique IP procedures  Legally exist  Gain recognition through affiliation with the IEEE  Operate w/o risk associated with unincorporated assoc.  Utilize resources on an as needed basis  Easy startup and disband Industry Programs of the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization, are able to….

Vision and Mission ISTO Vision To be the premier trusted partner of the global technology community for the development, adoption, and certification of industry standards. ISTO Mission To facilitate the life cycle of industry standards development through a staff committed to neutrality, quality, and member satisfaction.

2005 Board of Directors (7) Business and affairs of IEEE-ISTO managed by its President and Secretary Treasurer under direction of IEEE-ISTO BoD: –Keith Gray, Technology Director for the Circuit Breaker Technology Solutions, ABB Technologies –Gerald T. Lane (Chairman) – Director, Corporate Standards Practices, IBM –Roger Martin, Director of Standards, AOL –Marco W. Migliaro, President and CEO, IEEE-ISTO –Miguel Pellon, Vice President and Director Standards and Technology Transfer, Motorola, Inc. –Bill Smith, Director, Business Alliances, Sun Microsystems –Don Wright, Director of Standards, Lexmark International

Representatives of IEEE to ISTO  Representative of the IEEE –Richard Schwartz, IEEE CFO (also participates on ISTO FinCom)  Representative of the IEEE-SA –Chuck Adams, IBM –Alternate – Jeanne Baronas, Sony  Both representatives attend ISTO BoD Meetings as an Observer.  Provide updates to/from ISTO BoD on respective activities

Current ISTO Programs (13) 2 Additional Programs Pending Announcement

IEEE-SA, CS SAB and ISTO  Objectives –Ensure the success of the SA, CS SAB and ISTO for the benefit of industry, each organization, and the IEEE.  Activities –Relationship building and education efforts toward key IEEE standards groups. –Initiate proactive joint business development activities where/if feasible –Pursue a viable candidate for a “parallel consortia” to support an IEEE Standards activity (e.g., WiMax, WiFi Alliance, 1394 TA, etc.) –ISTO’s legal umbrella and 501(c)(6) exemption provides the infrastructure to support conformance and/or interoperability testing in support of IEEE Standards.

ISTO and Conformance and Interoperability  The IEEE-ISTO (and the IEEE-SA) have discussed an initiative to provide a full-service program to support various aspects of validation, conformance and interoperability activities related to products and implementations manufactured in accordance with IEEE standards.  Benefits –Leverages the Powerful IEEE Brand in the Marketplace (Business to Business and End-User) –Taps into Existing Core Competencies of ISTO Staff and Organization Structure –Establishes Synergy between SA (through Society Sponsored activities) and ISTO –Post-Publication Activities Related to IEEE Standards remain affiliated with IEEE through the ISTO  Unique program to extend scope of post-development activities in support of IEEE Standards.  A complement to, not a competitor of, current processes  Marketplace recognizes importance of interoperability and compliance –Why shouldn’t IEEE and its Societies benefit from its brand (e.g., Wi- Fi™, WiMax™)? –Test labs, companies, and other organizations have demonstrated interests to work with IEEE in this area.

IEEE-ISTO: Activities  Standards development activities do not necessarily stop with the publication or approval of a standard  Promote resulting standards to gain market acceptance, support implementation and product development  IEEE-ISTO supports both development and post-development activities –Certification, Conformance Testing, Proactive Marketing, Branding, Interoperability Demonstrations and Plugfests
