IQ 11/25/13 pg 60 How many ways can I change an object’s position, direction, or speed? List all you can think of.
2
Pg 60 1) What do you need to do to make a book move across the table? 2) What do you need to do to move all of the tables across the room 3) A car 30 meters 4) A wall
3
Force pg 61 A push or a pull upon an object Measured in Newtons (unit used for force)
4
Type of Forces Gravity Friction Air Pressure Normal Magnetic
5
Unbalanced Forces When 2 or more forces act on an object, and 1 force is stronger than the others. Unbalanced forces cause an object’s velocity to change
6
Balanced forces When 2 or more forces act on an object equally. Balanced forces cause no change in velocity. O N for balanced object
7
NET FORCE: Total amount of force acting upon an object Calculating Net force: Forces in the Same Direction: Add the total forces Forces in Different Directions: subtract smaller force from larger force
8
PRACTICE PROBLEMS-in your notebook pg 61
9
Let’s reflect… If I am *not* moving, what can unbalanced forces cause me to do? If I *am* moving, what can unbalanced forces cause me to do?
10
Ticket out the Door Calculate the net force and direction
12
HOW DO WE SHOW WHAT FORCES ARE ACTING ON AN OBJECT? Free Body Diagrams
13
IQ11/26/13 Explain what would occur to the object below in terms of force and motion.
14
A force has both a magnitude (amount) and a direction
15
Which way will this ball accelerate? How can you tell?
16
Finding Net Force Just subtract the forces that are pushing/pulling in opposite directions 10 N4 N 3 N
17
What if the net force is 0? If arrows pointing opposite directions are equal, the net force is 0, and the object has a constant velocity
18
One Newton One Newton of Force is equivalent to what it takes to move a mass of one kilogram one meter per second per second or 1 m/s/s

Guided Reading For Each BLUE and GREEN heading, please do the following: Give 2 key ideas for each colored section Write down at least one word that you are not sure of the meaning, then write down what you think it means by using context clues. When finished with this, please come up to me to get a handout on the reading.

The image below shows a force of 10 N being applied to an object. The force is being applied toward the right, so the object is accelerating to the right. No other force is acting on the object. Examine the image. Then, answer the question that follows. A second force of 7 N is applied to the object. If this second force is applied toward the left, what will happen to the object’s motion?
