5 Formation of Andes Mountains
This diagram shows how over a long period of time, the Nazca plate slowly subductes under the South American plate. The farther it subductes, the bigger the Andes mountains grow and they begin to form around 60 million years ago. As the crust melts, it becomes less dense and moves to the surface creating a volcano. Click the screen to go back. Formation of Andes Mountains Nazca plate collided with South American plate -Nazca plate-Oceanic Crust -South American plate-Continental Nazca subducted under South American plate Volcanic mountains formed -Crust melted creating magma that rose to surface creating volcanos Andes Mountains were created Click For Picture

7 Age 140 MYA-Nazca plate subducted under South American Plate
MYA= Millions of Years Ago 140 MYA-Nazca plate subducted under South American Plate Andes Mountains began to from 45 MYA Formed 95 MYA after the subduction process happened Andes Mountains in Chile.

8 Rock Cycle Destructive Force
The quick melting of the crust causes it to become less dense and rise to the surface creating volcanic mountains. Subduction is occurring-Nazca plate subducting under South American plate. The force of the oceanic and continental plates are causing mountains to form. Convection currents cause the plates to move.

9 Composition Sedimentary Rocks make up the majority of the range.
-Sandstone (Clastic) -Siltstone (Clastic) -Shale (Clastic) -Limestone (Chemical) Layers of sandstone create parts of the Andes Mountains. Limestone on a mountain

10 The Future I think that the Andes Mountains will continue to slowly grow because the Nazca Plate is still slowly subducting under the South American Plate. Also weathering will erode the mountains making them smaller. As long as the Nazca plate is still subducting below the South American Plate, then I think there will be volcanoes forming in the Andes Mountains and erupting.
