Graduate Program Sept 26, 2008, Laszlo Mihaly

TA salaries 2002$14,000 2003$14,000 2004$14,500 2005 $14,500 2006 $15,000 2007 $15,700 2008 $16,500 2009 $17,300 (proposed) Second-year students get $500 more. We offer an additional $4,000 summer salary (not guaranteed). On path for being competitive with peer schools. Implication to research stipends: 2008: $16,500+$500+$4000+$500=$21,500 (minimum)

New initiatives NSLS II: operational in 2015. NSLS II will need (possibly) ~60 mid-level technical support personnel. - New course approved: PHY 518 “Applications of Synchrotron Radiation”. Jacobsen, Kao (BNL), Mihaly, Stephens - Expansion of the MSI program: NSLS is willing to provide fellowships. (Kao, Metcalf, Mihaly) CASE: Center for Accelerator Science and Education, a joint venture between BNL and Stony Brook. (Grannis, Hemmick, Lee, Marx...) - new measurements to the Grad. Lab. in preparation - existing PHY 684, “Accelerator Physics” course - added “Accelerator Physics” to PHY 599 - added “Synchrotron Radiation” to PHY 598

Course enrollments Tell students to register to your course. Allow auditing only if there is a very good reason for it.

TA and RA support – new trend?? Students picked up by research and supported as TAs. Note: We get 42 TA lines, but we need a minimum of 49 TAs

Extra TAs paid from tuition return Tuition return ~$70,000 in 2007-2008 ~$105,000 in 2008-2009 Summary: University pays ~$17,000 for 42 TAs The rest of the money can be spent on graduate education at the discretion of the Department, but there are not many choices – pay TAs. This year we have absolutely no funds left for helping in “emergency situations”.

Research expenditures in P&A The big question: do we need to reduce the size of the graduate program?
