IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU KNOW, SERVE, OR LOVE GOD? WHY IS THIS A VOCATION? AT BAPTISM WE RECEIVE OUR FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT HOLY VOCATION: “TO KNOW, SERVE, AND LOVE GOD.” BAPTISM IS THE VOCATION OUT OF WHICH ALL OTHER VOCATIONS GROW. BAPTISM IS ALSO WHEN WE ARE GIVEN THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him. Then a voice said from heaven, This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.” (Matthew 3:16) AT CONFIRMATION WE REAFFIRM OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR BAPTISMAL VOCATION “TO KNOW, SERVE, AND LOVE GOD.” AND THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT ARE RENEWED WITHIN US. “Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.” (Acts 2:3,4)

THOSE INCLUDED IN THIS VOCATION ARE: 1.FAMILY 2.DEDICATED SINGLES

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ABLE TO DO SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE COULD? WHAT ARE THEY? THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE GIFTS GIVEN TO US THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT AT BAPTISM AND REAFFIRMED AT CONFRIMATION. THEY HELP US ACCOMPLISH OUR VOCATION TO KNOW, LOVE, AND SERVE THE LORD. THEY ARE: 1.PIETY 2.KNOWLEDGE 3.WIDSOM 4.UNDERSTANDING 5.COUNSEL 6.FORTITUDE 7.FEAR OF THE LORD OUR PERSONAL AVOCATIONS INCLUDE OUR CHOICE OF OCCUPATION, AS WELL AS THE DAILY CHOICES WE MAKE. AVOCATIONS ARE ALSO THE UNIQUE TALENTS WE ALL POSSESS. IF VOCATION IS WHO WE ARE CALLED TO BE THEN AVOCATION IS WHAT WE ARE CALLED TO DO.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN REALLY UPSET BECAUSE YOU DISAPPOINTED SOMEONE WHOSE OPINION YOU REALLY VALUE? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? FEAR OF THE LORD IS OUR DESIRE TO NOT DISAPPOINT GOD. THE FEAR THIS GIFT IDENTIFIES ISN’T A FEAR OF PUNISHMENT IT IS LIKE WHEN WE GET UPSET ABOUT DISAPPOINTING A CLOSE FRIEND OR RESPECTED ADULT. WE ARE CLOSE TO GOD AND DON’T WANT TO DISAPPOINT HIM. FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE STARTING POINT FOR ALL OF THE OTHER GIFTS. IF WE FEEL NO REVERENCE FOR GOD THEN ALL THE OTHER GIFTS BECOME IRRELEVENT.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD REALLY DEEP RESPECT FOR SOMEONE OR SOME PLACE? WHAT ARE THEY? PIETY IS THE GIFT THAT HELPS US HAVE A DEEP SENSE OF RESPECT FOR GOD AND THE CHURCH. A PERSON WITH PIETY RECOGNIZES OUR TOTAL RELIANCE ON GOD AND COMES BEFORE GOD WITH HUMILITY, TRUST, AND LOVE. PIETY IS THE GIFT THAT COMPELS US TO WORSHIP GOD AS OUR FATHER. KNOWLEDGE IS THE GIFT THAT HELPS US UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF GOD. THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE IS MORE THAN ACCUMULATION OF FACTS. KNOWLEDGE ALSO ENABLES US TO REALIZE THE EMPTINESS OF CREATED THINGS SO THAT THEY DON’T BECOME ROADBLOCKS TO UNION WITH GOD.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ABLE TO KNOW THE TRUTH WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO PROVE IT? UNDERSTANDING IS THE GIFT THAT HELPS US TO NOT BE CONFUSED BY THE CONFLICTING MESSAGES OF OUR CULTURE. A PERSON WITH UNDERSTANDING IS ABLE TO DISTINGUISH THE TRUTH WITHOUT HAVING ALL THE FACTS. A PERSON WITH UNDERSTANDING IS ABLE TO APPRECIATE QUALITIES THAT HAVE NO EVIDENCE: LOVE, BEAUTY, HOLINESS, GRACE. COUNSEL ALSO CALLED RIGHT JUDGEMENT IS THE GIFT THAT HELPS US KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG AND TO ALWAYS CHOOSE TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT. A PERSON WITH THIS GIFT AVOIDS SIN AND LIVES OUT THE VALUES TAUGHT BY JESUS CHRIST. A PERSON WITH THIS GIFT CAN ALSO BE A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR THOSE AROUND THEM WHO ARE FACING DILEMMAS OF THEIR OWN. WHAT ARE THEY?

HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO ENDURE SOMETHING DIFFICULT TO DO WHAT WAS GOOD? WISDOM IS THE GIFT THAT HELPS US TO SEE GOD AT WORK IN OUR LIVES AND IN THE WORLD AROUND US. A PERSON WITH WISDOM SEES NATURE, HISTORY, AND THE STRUGGLES OF LIFE THROUGH THE EYES OF GOD. A PERSON WITH WISDOM SEES GOD AS THE FATHER OF ALL CREATION AND VALUES THE DIGNITY OF ALL THINGS BECAUSE OFTHIS AWARENESS. FORTITUDE ALSO CALLED COURAGE IS THE GIFT THAT HELPS US TO OVERCOME OUR FEARS AND MAKES US WILLING TO TAKE RISKS FOR OUR FAITH A PERSON WITH FORTITUFE IS WILLING TO STAND UP FOR WHAT’S RIGHT EVEN IF IT MAKES THEM UNPOPULAR. A PERSON WITH COURAGE IS RESOLVED TO DO WHAT IT TAKES TO DO GOOD AND ENDURE EVIL. WHAT ARE THEY?
