Hamilton’s Tariff Program, 1791 Ham. wanted to strengthen the u.s economy. In order to promote u.s. manufacturing, he proposed at Tariff (tax on imports). This tariff would make goods from foreign countries more expensive to buy than u.s made products.

Opposing Viewpoints North The industrial north favored Ham’s plan. A tariff would encourage Americans to buy products from the North rather than from foreign countries. South The south opposed Ham’s plan. The south was agriculture and they relied heavily on imported goods more expensive.

Results/Effects Congress passed a tariff bill that was much lower than the protective tariff called for by Hamilton.
