Objective Essential Question Students will be able to divide polynomials with long division or synthetic division, including ones with remainders. ---------------------------------- How does division of polynomials relate to your prior knowledge?
4
Review Allows you to check for factors of a polynomial Allows you to divide by linear, quadratic, or any other factors! What does it mean if there is a remainder?
5
Remainders with Long Division
7
Synthetic Division The shorthand of long division Only works for linear factors! Careful with your powers of x!!!! 1.Write an upside down division sign 2.Write the coefficients of the dividend, leaving space underneath for another row of numbers 3.Write the opposite constant from the linear factor 4.Bring down the first coefficient 5.Multiply it by the number from step 3 to get the next number

Remainder Theorem If you are dividing a polynomial, f(x), by x-a, the remainder would be found by plugging in a for x f(x)= x - a a is the opposite number of the constant f(a)=f(-3)=
