Warm UP! List things that all humans need to survive. What are some things we depend on to support a comfortable lifestyle in 2012? What is the difference in “survival” and “lifestyle”? List some things you enjoy but could survive without? Home many things can be made from a tree?

Quick Review 1.I provide clean energy from running water which turns giant turbines, but there are fewer and fewer locations where I will work 2.I am the most abundant of fossil fuels, a nonrenewable source of energy, expensive to mine, and a cause of acid rain (pollution) 3.I am the “hope for the future.” A free and non-polluting source of energy but expensive to build in homes. On cloudy days I’m hard to find. 4.I release an enormous amount of energy but am dangerous due to high risks of radioactive waste products, meltdowns, and radiation exposure. I form from the splitting nucleus of uranium atoms. 5.I am the cleanest burning fossil fuel but will leave large craters in the earth from where I’m extracted and am highly flamable if handled carelessly. Solar Energy Natural Gas Coal Hydroelectric energy Nuclear Fission Who am i?
3
Deforestation Explanation: – Removal of trees so land can be used for other purposes
4
Deforestation How bad is it for the environment? – Responsible for ~ 20% of Earth’s greenhouse gasses – less CO2 removed from atmosphere by trees – damages soil, increased erosion
5
Deforestation Solution? – Replant trees and use other materials or energy sources to prevent cutting down trees
6
URBANIZATION HTTP://YOUTU.BE/Z9AZFWFYATI HTTP://YOUTU.BE/Z9AZFWFYATI
7
Urbanization Explanation: – Physical and massive growth of and migration to large cities
8
Urbanization How bad is it for the environment? – Heat is becoming more abundant & heat is absorbed
9
Urbanization Solution? – Implement places where land will not be harmed – Reclamation – Urban farming
10
DEFORESTATION HTTP://YOUTU.BE/FO4WXLY4QYK HTTP://YOUTU.BE/FO4WXLY4QYK
11
Overgrazing Explanation: – Plants are exposed to intensive grazing for long periods of time without enough time to recover – caused by poor agricultural applications or overpopulations of invasive species
12
Overgrazing How bad is it for the environment? – Increases soil erosion which harms future agricultural productivity
13
Overgrazing Solution? – Can be corrected with lime and organic fertilizers – Loss of soil depth, however, takes centuries to correct
14
OVERGRAZING HTTP://YOUTU.BE/DCHVJIPWIXK HTTP://YOUTU.BE/DCHVJIPWIXK
15
Agriculture Explanation: – Also, FARMING – Cultivation of plants, animals, fungi and other life forms for food, fiber, and other products used to sustain life
16
Quiz in 15 minutes 10:07
17
Agriculture How bad is it for the environment? – We have to overuse farms in order to sustain a growing human population. We use too many chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers
18
Agriculture Solution? – Population control – Sustainable farming – Practices (organic

Checks for understanding Desertification, soil erosion, urbanization, and agriculture collectively affect the _________. 1)Lithosphere 2)Mantle 3)Weather 4)Human population
21
Checks for Understanding Which of the following is an example of negative impact on the environment due to human activity? 1.Oil in the Gulf of Mexico 2.Volcanic ash in the atmosphere 3.Tsunamis caused by earthquakes 4.The movement of Earth’s plate over time
22
Quick Quizzes What is urbanization? 1.A clothing style 2.physical growth of an area as a result of global change 3.type of farming 4.growth of land over time
23
Quick Quizzes What is going to happen if all of the undeveloped land in an area becomes developed? 1.No land for farming 2.no land for animals 3.no land for trees 4.all the above

Photo Matching- Directions On the back of your notes are a list of titles. You must match these titles with the photos you see on the board. On your worksheet, write the photo number, the appropriate title, and fill out the rest of the info about the photo
25
Photo Matching Expectations – You are going around with your assigned group members – Talking quietly about the picture – Writing in the title, description & solution – Do not rotate until directed to

Exit Quiz This is review for mid-term exam This will go over unit 1 material On the back when finished explain how these terms are related to impacting the lithosphere 1.Urbanization 2.Overgrazing
