Solid Figures Brought to you by powerpointpros.com
2
What are Solid Figures? Solid figures are 3-dimensional figures that have length, width, and height. Solid figures can be made with more than one shape.
3
Types of Solid Figures There are 6 different types of solid figures we are going to look at today: Pyramids Prisms Cylinders Cones Spheres Cubes
4
PYRAMIDS Solid Figures Solid Figures:
5
What are Pyramids? A pyramid is a solid figure that has a polygon for a base, and three or more triangular faces that meet at a point called an apex. The triangular sides are called the lateral faces to distinguish them from the base. Pyramids
6
Types of Pyramids There are many different types of pyramids. Pyramids are classified by the shape of their base, since all of the other faces are triangles. So, if we had a pentagon for the base of a pyramid, that pyramid could be classified as a pentagonal pyramid. Pyramids
7
Examples of Pyramids Here are some examples of pyramids. Can you classify them by their bases? Pyramids This pyramid is a Pentagonal pyramid! This pyramid is a Triangular pyramid! This pyramid is a Rectangular pyramid!
8
Review of Pyramids A pyramid is a solid figure that has a polygon for a base, and three or more triangular faces that meet at a point called an apex. Pyramids can be classified by their bases. Pyramids
9
PRISMS Solid Figures Solid Figures:
10
What are Prisms? A prism is a solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases (which are polygons) and flat faces. Prisms
11
Types of Prisms Prisms can, like pyramids, be classified by the shape of their bases. So, if you have a prism with triangles for bases, you would have a triangular prism. Prisms
12
Examples of Prisms Here are some examples of prisms. Can you classify them by their bases? Prisms This prism is a Triangular prism! This prism is a Hexagonal prism! This prism is a Rectangular prism!
13
Review of Prisms A prism is a solid figure that has parallel and congruent bases (which are polygons) and flat faces. Prisms can be classified by the shape of their bases. Prisms
14
A Special Type of Prism There is another solid figure that is also a prism, but it is a special type of prism. We will talk about that solid figure in the next section. Prisms
15
CUBES Solid Figures Solid Figures:
16
What are Cubes? Recall that a prism is a solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases (which are polygons) and flat faces. A cube is a special type of prism, so it fits that description. Cubes
17
What Makes a Cube a Cube? A cube is a type of prism; a rectangular prism, to be exact. The difference between an ordinary rectangular prism and a cube is the fact that all of a cube’s faces are congruent, or, the same shape and size. All of the 6 faces on a cube are also squares. Therefore, a cube has the same dimensions for its length, width, and height. Cubes
18
An Example of a Cube This is an example of a cube: Cubes Notice that all of the faces on the cube are congruent squares. That key feature is what sets a cube apart from a rectangular prism.
19
Cube or Rectangular Prism? Look at the solid figures below. Identify whether they are cubes or rectangular prisms. Cubes Rectangular prism Cube!Rectangular prism
20
Review of Cubes A cube is a solid figure that has six flat, congruent, square faces. A cube is a special type of prism. Cubes
21
CYLINDERS Solid Figures Solid Figures:
22
What are Cylinders? A cylinder is a solid figure that has 2 congruent, parallel, circular bases that are connected by a curved side. Cylinders
23
Examples of Cylinders These are all cylinders: Cylinders Notice that all of these solid figures are cylinders because they all have 2 congruent, parallel, circular bases that are connected by a curved side.
24
Review of Cylinders A cylinder is a solid figure that has 2 congruent, parallel, circular bases that are connected by a curved side. Cylinders
25
CONES Solid Figures Solid Figures:
26
What are Cones? A cone is a solid figure with 1 circular base and a vertex that is not on the base. The vertex and the circular base are connected by a curved side. Cones
27
Example of a Cone This is an example of a cone: Cones This is the circular base of the cone. This is the vertex of the cone. And this is the curved side that connects them!
28
Review of Cones A cone is a solid figure with 1 circular base and a vertex that is not on the base. The vertex and the circular base are connected by a curved side. Cones
29
SPHERES Solid Figures Solid Figures:
30
What are Spheres? A sphere is a solid figure in which a set of points are of equal distance from the center point. A sphere is round, like a basketball. Spheres
31
Example of a Sphere This is an example of a sphere: Spheres
32
Review of Spheres A sphere is a solid figure in which a set of points are of equal distance from the center point. A sphere is round. Spheres
