Anthem By: Ayn Rand
3
Ayn Rand “My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.”
4
Collectivism Emphasizes the importance of community. The needs of the group are more important than the needs of a person. Society is more valuable than its individual members.
5
Individualism Exact opposite of collectivism. Stresses: – Self reliance – Individual Liberty – Independence Opposes any power that limits an individual’s right to choose.

Ayn Rand Rand was born in Russia in 1905, to a fairly well-off, intellectual Jewish family. At age twelve, she witnessed the Russian Revolution, in which the communists (most definitely "collectivists") took over the county The communists began to take away property from the well-off in the name of "the proletariat" (the poor, working class). Rand's family lost almost everything to the government and Rand herself was later almost expelled from the university for not being "proletarian" enough.
