Islington Green School-History of Song Written by Roger Waters in 1979 for Pink Floyd Regimented education system Students sang on the track (innovative music teacher/music program at the school) School received a lot of backlash for letting students sing School started becoming more conservative (opposite effect song was supposed to have) Legacy still remains

South Africa Song became an anthem for the anti-apartheid movement Oppression everywhere, eventually became prominent in schools June 16, 1976- Soweto Uprising by students “Another Brick in the Wall” became an anthem for marches/protests similar to the Soweto Uprising Hit #1 and stayed #1 for 11 weeks Students against authority in the education system May 6, 1980- The Wall was banned in South Africa by the government, ending the use of the record as a protest song

Iranian Protest Movement 1979- Iranian Revolution (a lot of youth involvement) Revolution did not give people the independence they hoped for New regime under Ayatollah Khamenei very strict/theocratic Unrest persists in the country post the revolution Rock music banned in the country “Hey Ayatollah”- 2 native born Iranians re-recorded “Another Brick in the Wall” to show support/raise awareness Became a protest anthem amongst the youth in Iran… anti authority in not only schools but daily life Pink Floyd and Blurred Vision started online protest movement to raise awareness, and petitions
