2. Equine WHAT KIND OF HOUSING DO YOU NEED FOR A HORSE?
a. The first thing to do is to identify the horse's needs:
i. Size and makeup
ii. A draft horse to be worked in the field - parade - show;
iii. Riding horse for pleasure - AQHA Congress candidate.

3. b. Make up a list that shows how each animal will be managed, handled, housed - be specific - list can be quite long or quite short, depending on operation.
c. Consider future expansion -
i. Set future goals for the operation (expansion, growth);
ii. Include these in the plans - leave room for easy expansion, if needed - make mistakes before building, not after.

4. Equine d. Figure barn space needed, if using a barn.
If given a wind break (shelter), horses (and other animals) don't need a barn - they need water and nourishment. If trees are available horses can do with that.
If you need some type of shelter built, you need to determine what kind, how big, storage spaces, box or tie stalls, riding areas, etc.

9. iv. After figuring space needed, determine type of building to be used
(1) Open housing - one of more sides of the housing left open - temperature inside and outside about the same.
(2) Cold housing - enclosed building with temperature fluctuations along with outside temps. Ventilation is usually required to remove excess moisture from the building. Usually has box stalls.
(3) Warm housing - enclosed and heated building. Temperature maintained during winter months (usually between 55 degrees and 65 degrees. This type of building needs insulation and ventilation. Box or tie stalls. Heated for human comfort and for show horses that have been shaved.
v. Once the type of building is garnered, then decide on stall type (box or tie), and how it will be set up.

ii. Could be more economical than building a new facility.
