Ninety percent of these deaths are linked to smoking.

12 How Tobacco Affects the Body Facts About Lung Cancer Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, causing 87 percent of lung cancer cases. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 different chemicals, many of which are cancer-causing substances. Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, causing more deaths than the next three most common cancers combined. Secondhand smoke is also an important cause of lung cancer.
