Committee Charge Examine and respond to IDEA implementation issues as they arose Examine the reliability and validity problems associated with using IDEA in small classes Make recommendations for implementing IDEA effectively given its strengths and weaknesses

Problems & Questions How do we create systems that lead to meaningful and effective evaluation of teaching? How do we to meet the varied needs, ie, small class size, graduate courses, distance, community campus needs, etc.? How do we to build trust about teaching evaluation? How do we make teaching central to the University mission? How do we truly assess the complexity of the teaching role we hold? How do we acknowledge and assess teaching outside the face to face setting?

Student Feedback Institutional Teaching Mission Contributions Fostering Student Success Syllabi and Course Materials Evaluation of Teaching A Proposed Model for Effective and Meaningful Evaluation of Teaching

Student Success Support for student advancement and recognition (e.g., writing letters of recommendation and/or nominating students for scholarships and awards); Student accomplishments (e.g., Student Showcase, Undergraduate Research Grants, students present papers at professional conferences);

Student Success academic advising, chairing student committees (e.g., graduate honors or capstone); Mentoring RAs and TAs; Other

Student Feedback Classes with at least 15 students and a 65 percent response rate may use IDEA to gather student opinions; Small classes or a low response rate, will use an alternative assessment tool; Faculty whose classes meet the criteria for using IDEA may also choose to use an alternative assessment tool.

Course Syllabi and Materials Syllabus and at least one example of course materials for each course; Examples of course materials are assignments, tests, lecture notes, power point presentations, etc.

Contribution to Institutional Teaching Mission attending workshops to improve teaching (e.g., CAFÉ or others); presenting workshops to UA peers about teaching; teaching innovation (e.g., using the book(s) of the semester); integrating new materials, integrating technology);

Contribution to Institutional Teaching Mission conducting service learning; conducting research on teaching and learning for publication in peer reviewed teaching journals; having classroom peer evaluation, and serving as a peer evaluator for faculty peers. other

IDEA Recommendations Recommendations guided and grounded in a larger vision of effective and meaningful evaluation of teaching. IDEA is one tool that can be used.

Recommendations to the Provost One more semester during which IDEA evaluations will not be used for future P & T decisions; Establish a summer working group to devise/adopt peer evaluation and formative student evaluation tools and samples for faculty.
